Launching a membership is exciting!
You imagine the community, the impact, the recurring revenue and the freedom that comes with it. And while all of those things are absolutely possible, one year in, I can confidently tell you: there’s a lot that happens behind the scenes to make the magic happen.
Before launching my own membership - The Collective, I’d supported plenty of clients in setting up theirs - mapping out launch strategies, automations, onboarding systems and all the tech that comes with it.
But stepping into the role of membership owner myself? That gave me a whole new perspective.
Whether you're dreaming of launching a membership or are in the early stages, I wanted to share some of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt from being on this side of the experience.
Let me be clear - your “partner” doesn’t have to be a co-founder (though that is what I choose). What I mean is: don’t try to do it all on your own. Whether it’s a virtual assistant, an OBM or even just a biz bestie who's been there before, having someone in your corner who understands what you’re trying to build makes a world of difference.
There’s so much that goes into setting up a membership: content planning, onboarding sequences, nurturing your members, managing tech and staying visible to attract new members. Trying to juggle it solo can lead to burnout - fast!
This is by far one of the most rewarding aspects. When you create a membership, you're not just selling a product, you’re creating a space. A space where like-minded people come together, grow together and support each other.
Watching relationships form between members, witnessing those “aha!” moments on live calls, and seeing people return month after month because they feel seen and supported is pure gold. If community lights you up, a membership might be the perfect fit.
Tech can be your best friend or your biggest headache. Over the last year, I’ve tested, tweaked and streamlined the tools weI use, and here's what I’ve learnt: you don’t need all the bells and whistles but you do need systems that are reliable, simple and scalable.
From your membership platform (we use FEA Create) to your payment gateways (Stripe was our preferred one) and community spaces (our Facebook group works well), the tools you choose should support your growth, not slow it down.
💡 Pro tip: Map the experience you want your members to have first, then choose tools that bring that vision to life.
One of the biggest perks of having an ongoing relationship with your audience is how quickly you learn what does and doesn't resonate.. You get instant feedback. You learn what topics land, what support they need and what they’re struggling with right now.
This means you can continuously evolve your offer to meet their needs and deepen the transformation you're delivering.
Let’s be honest - memberships don’t usually explode overnight. They grow gradually. People join, they refer friends, your visibility expands and slowly but surely, you build something sustainable.
The key? Consistency.
Keep showing up. Keep serving. Keep refining your offer. The compounding results will come.
If you’ve been sitting on the idea of starting a membership but the tech, strategy or marketing side of things feels overwhelming I’d love to help.
