October 16, 20223 min read

Are you a bit bamboozled when it comes to which type of lead magnet you should offer your audience?

I don’t blame you, there’s an awful lot of information out there about what you should be doing to attract your ideal clients and it can be overwhelming when you’re new to it!

Firstly, let’s start with the basics…

What is a Lead Magnet?

A lead magnet (also referred to as an Opt-In or Freebie) is a free offer that you will use to attract people to opt in to your list.

Your Lead Magnet should be designed specifically to appeal to your ideal client. It should help demonstrate your skill and expertise in your field. And it should be solving part of the problem that your customer has.

Gemma Went, an online business coach and marketing expert suggests that your lead magnet should be solving 20% of the problem that your potential client faces.

So, by providing something of real value your prospective buyers, it will make them want to purchase your service or product to have you solve the remaining 80% of their problem!

What type of Lead Magnet should you offer?

Lead magnets come in many forms and what you choose to offer will depend on your business. They can be loosely categorised into the following:

  • Useful lead magnets

  • Educational lead magnets

  • Entertaining lead magnets

  • Community Building lead magnets

  • Bottom of funnel lead magnets

Let me now explain a little about each type and when you might use them.

Useful Lead Magnets

These help the user to save time, energy, money, and more. We all want something that makes life easier so think of something that gives users a ‘quick win’. It should be something actionable that they can take away and use or implement right away.

Examples include checklists, cheat sheets, templates, swipe files, scripts, tool kits, calendars, planners and workbooks.

Educational Lead Magnets

These will explain a specific topic that is relevant to your service. Educational lead magnets help users to understand whythey need your product or service, and how it will help them.

They demonstrate your authority in your area and are a great way to build brand awareness and credibility.

Examples include eBooks, guides, whitepapers, videos, audios, webinars, sample chapters, reports or free coaching sessions.

Entertaining Lead Magnets

A lead magnet doesn’t necessarily have to be useful or educational. Entertaining lead magnets can be a great way to grow your email list.

Examples include quizzes, surveys, giveaways, quotes or visual downloads.

Community-Building Lead Magnets

Communities are a place where like-minded people can communicate with each other. Communities can be hugely valuable and many people are willing to pay to be a member… never mind give their email address.

Examples include challenges, membership sites or Facebook groups.

Bottom of Funnel Lead Magnets

There are occasions where a lead will come to you almost ready to purchase – perhaps they have been referred to you or read reviews elsewhere. In this instance you may wish to offer something to help them make their decision.

Examples of this type of lead magnet include free trials, discount codes, free shipping or free consultation.
